Why Plants? The Benefits of Interior Plantscapes

February 24, 2019

Garden Streets’ mission is bringing people closer to nature through plants, and there are many mental and physical benefits for doing so. Interior plantscapes help reduce stress, boost cognition, and improve productivity of employees that results in a positive impact on the bottom line.

Indoor plants can help companies economically while also improving their corporate wellness program in a fresh and lively way.

Numerous scientific studies illustrate the benefits of plants for people who are surrounded by them:

mental health

Reduce stress and anxiety. A study published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology showed that indoor plants reduce both physical and psychological symptoms of stress and anxiety.

Have happier employees. Eighty two percent of employees who work in offices with plants and windows rate their experience at work as “very happy” compared to only 58 percent of employees who work in places lacking plants and windows.

Boost cognition. “Green-certified” office spaces boost employee cognition by 26 percent.

physical health

Improve air quality. Plants significantly improve air quality and can reduce airborne mold, bacteria, and allergens by 60 percent. Plants also can reduce indoor air pollution by removing excess CO2 and harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air.

Avoid burnout. Studies show that employees with plants in their workspace have a 38 percent reduction in fatigue.

economic benefits

Retain staff. A healthy staff can often be a happy and productive one that wants to stay aboard. Interior plantscapes can help reduce expensive turnover costs that can run from one half to two times an employee’s salary. Given that human capital is the biggest asset for companies, staff retention during times of low unemployment rates translate into real competitive advantage.

Improve productivity and creativity. Workplaces that incorporate greenery and plants increased office productivity by 15 percent and creativity also by 15 percent.

Reduce absences. Green office spaces have 30 percent fewer sickness related absences and can reduce general absenteeism by 10 percent.
